Emily Sartain (1841-1927) came from a family of artists. Her father and brothers were printmakers. Some examples of her own prints can be found at the web site of The Philadelphia Print Shop, Ltd. http://www.philaprintshop.com/sartem.html. Emily, a friend of Mary Cassatt, was also a well-known painter. She was principal of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, later the Moore College of Art and Design, from 1886 until 1919. She was a leader in the women's art movement and a noted speaker on its behalf. More information about the Sartain family can be found
at The
Temple University Press web site. A book recently
published by the Temple University Press details the
lives of this fascinating family: "Philadelphia's Cultural Landscape"
