My work deals with a variety of closely-knit subjests. Camouflaging the recognizable into the unnoticeable. Confidence paralleled with doubt and uncertainty. The artificial versus the perfect. These issues have been and remain to be complex areas of my life.

Unnoticed (2005) combines the familiar and the overlooked into a piece that describes life. The figure in the piece is camouflaged into the decayed tree bark, illustrating how life can go unnoticed. |

Artificial Hand: The Identity Mask (2005) is a prosthetic glove that I fabricated to fit my left hand, which is afflicted with a congenital birth defect. I initially was curious to see how others would react to the complete hand, but I discovered my own reactions in the process. I assumed the so-called “normal” hand would invoke a feeling of completion and perfection within me; it insetad brought on feelings of utter fakeness. The photographic series Before, During and After illustrates how the prosthetic hand has influenced my confidence. I have found the confidence and the inspiration to create this work from my family, and artists such as Laura Frazure and Ana Mendieta. I plan to continue working with these subjects, and others that may arise during the course of my life. I hope to grow as a person and as an artist in the process. |
