Richard E. Goldberg Physician
to Artist - A Seamless Transition
Retired as a retinal surgeon and now in my fifth
year as professional artist the commonalities of medicine and
art become increasingly evident. Each allows for the privileged
observer, strives for essence of subject, accepts vulnerability,
cultivates spirituality, calls for restraint (even in the presence
of exuberance) and embeds the renderer and the recipient in a
therapeutic mileau. Transdisciplinary, "Doctor" and "Artist" are
one and for me. That is what it means "To Be An Artist".
Dick Goldberg, a retired vitreoretinal surgeon, is a self taught artist. His most recognized images are landscape oil paintings which capture quiet, spiritual, uplifting moments. Color; light, atmosphere and space engender an emotional response, drawing the viewer into the painting. "Feeling" is seminal in the artist's work which is often "impressionistic", with an instinctive romantic essence. Dick relates "he feels a privileged observer and that art provides a unique opportunity for artist and viewer to open themselves to each other and even something larger than themselves. The artist's works are in public and private collections.
